Nick Kuchar is a talented surfer/designer who was born in Florida but now lives in Hawaii. His whimsical and modern island illustrations transport us back to a time when white sandy beaches and the intoxicating scent of plumeria beckoned weary travelers from all over the world. We spoke with Nick to learn more.

Where did you grow up? What was your childhood like?

I grew up in Florida and had a great childhood. I loved drawing, building things, and being outside. So many things I was into as a child have become my passions and careers as an adult.

What drew you to settle in Hawaii?

My wife and I moved to Hawai‘i in 2005. We planted our roots when we fell in love with the community and culture.

Tell us about your introduction to the ocean and how you began surfing.

I had a couple of childhood friends who surfed all the time in New Smyrna Beach. I tracked down a busted Ron Jon longboard for $50. From that point on, I was hooked. I can still picture a couple of those early rides when everything clicked. It was when my board was gliding down the face of a glassy wave.

When did you begin drawing and painting?

As long as I can remember, I've always loved creating. My mom has some pencil sketches I did when I was two years old. I was always trying to make or build something, with varying levels of success. A lot of failures helped me learn along the way. Now that I have small children myself, it’s a blast to see their interests and gifts.

Who do you admire in the world of art and design?

There are so many talented creatives! Especially now, with social media, you can see their work with a click on your phone. I'm influenced by mid-century designs and artists like Raymond Loewy, Saul Bass, and Charley Harper. Also, surf artists like Rick Griffin and John Severson.

What do you hope to create in the person's mind viewing your art?

I hope my art brings joy and a whimsical feeling to the viewer, as well as a respect for the locations I illustrate in Hawai‘i. We live in a special place, and I try to convey that beauty through my work.

How does surfing and its culture have an influence on your work?

Surfing and surfing culture is a never-ending source of inspiration. The many eras of surfboards, color palettes, and types of waves — the list is endless. Surfing is plain fun. There are so many heavy things in this world. It’s wonderful to find respite in something simple, like catching waves.

What brings you the most happiness in the world?

Nowadays, I see my kids happy and succeeding. I’ve heard that being a dad is the most important business you’ll ever run (laughs). Seeing the world through their young eyes is great.

What "golden rule" do you live by?

Do not be afraid to fail. Failures happen along the way. It can be a real tragedy to quit too soon or refuse to learn from those failures.

What is your current favorite board? What is your favorite surf spot?

I have a 9’8" Pinder that I tandem surf with my 5-year-olds. My current favorite is seeing them stoked on a wave and learning. We usually surf in the Kalaeloa and Ewa Beach areas near our house.

Who are some of the people you feel are shaping the path of surfing culture today?

I met Donald Brink a few years ago while exhibiting in Japan. A rad California-based shaper experimenting with asymmetrical designs Creative thinking pushes the whole industry forward.

What's your favorite meal, and what’s on your music playlist?

I love street tacos. If you’re in Hawai’i, you can’t go wrong with a post-surf plate lunch! Music playlists depend on what I’m doing. I’ve found that if I am creating, talented songwriters like Bob Dylan and Jason Isbell are motivating. If I am on the print table pulling screens, something fun, like Babe Rainbow is also great.

What are you most grateful for?

I am grateful for so many things. An amazing family, creating art for a living, the ability to go hiking or surf year-round. To me, it's so important to remember how blessed we are every day.

What’s next for Nick Kuchar?

I love to create and grow as an artist. Where that goes is sometimes not up to me – but I love the journey!
